A 5-minute checklist to uncover gaps in your Bitcoin inheritance plan — before life does it for you.
If you disappeared tomorrow, could your spouse, kids, or executor actually access your Bitcoin — safely, quickly, and without guesswork?
Tick the boxes as you go. The more 'No / Not sure' answers you have, the higher your inheritance risk.
1. Does at least one trusted person know you hold Bitcoin (beyond vague hints)?
2. Does anyone know where your Bitcoin is held (e.g. which hardware wallets, exchanges, or multisig setups)?
3. Is there a clear written record of what needs to be accessed when you die (without revealing keys today)?
4. Are your seed phrases/backups stored so a trusted person could locate them after your death, without being able to easily steal them today?
5. Have you written plain-language steps an executor/loved one must follow to access and transfer/sell your Bitcoin?
6. Have you considered and documented how your loved ones/executor would handle potential tax implications when transferring or selling the Bitcoin?
7. If you use multisig, have you documented which keys exist, where they are kept, how many are required, and the process to execute?
8. If using advanced setups (e.g. Shamir's Secret Sharing, collaborative custody services, or time-locked mechanisms), have you documented the exact tools/services involved and any recovery/contact steps?
9. Does your current will explicitly address your Bitcoin and/or digital assets?
10. Have you appointed an executor capable of handling Bitcoin, or nominated a digital/technical advisor to support them?
11. Have you reviewed your will/estate plan in the last 2-3 years to reflect your current Bitcoin holdings and setup?
12. Have you assessed whether your intended heirs or executor have (or can quickly gain) basic Bitcoin knowledge, and provided resources to help them avoid common mistakes?
13. If you died tonight, how quickly could your loved ones (realistically) locate your will, find your Bitcoin instructions, and access the setup? (Consider factors like safe-deposit box access, lawyer involvement, or travel to physical backups.)
14. Have you ever tested your inheritance plan (a drill where someone follows your instructions up to — but not including — moving funds)?
Please answer all questions before calculating your score.
Count of 'No / Not sure' answers (excluding N/A). Question 13 is your reality check.
If this stress test exposed gaps, you're not alone. Most Bitcoiners have strong self-custody and a weak inheritance plan.
